At least 800,000 migrants are about to depart the North African coast for Europe, while the reception system in Italy – the first landing point for the vast majority of these – is already on the brink of collapse from tens of thousands of earlier arrivals, official said Tuesday. „We no longer have a place to take them, and locals are overwhelmed by the constant arrival of foreigners,“ Giovanni Pinto, head of the Immigration and Border Police agency, told a joint meeting of the foreign and defence committees in the Italian Senate. They call them Ciyaalka Badda or children from the sea. This phrase is used when referring to the young Somali refugees who come by boat from North Africa.

The expressions of the eight young Somali men leaning against the wall outside Termini station tell a complex story. They are caught in the midst of a political turmoil. Trapped between one country that disregards their existence and another whose very existence is in question, they struggle to find their place in the world.

Since the collapse of the government over two decades ago, Somalia has become the second largest refugee producing country in the world. In the last ten years, there has been an influx of African refugees and migrants to southern Europe. Using Italy as a mere transit point, their goal is to reach the rest of Europe. However, many do not make it past Italian territory.

It is their hands that tie them to Italy. […]“

Nach heutigen Konferenzen mit Militärs und Regierungskreisen ruft der italienische Innenminister die EU und die UNO auf, Verantwortung im Kanal von Sizilien und gegenüber der Krise in Libyen zu übernehmen. Die militärische Operation „Mare Nostrum“ sei befristet. Am 1. Juli übernimmt Italien die EU-Präsidentschaft.

„(Reuters) – Libya plans to expel 271 migrants from sub-Saharan countries in a fresh crackdown on illegal immigration to and through the North African country, state news agency LANA said on Tuesday.

The emigrants will be deported to their home countries Chad, Niger, Eritrea, Ghana, Sudan and Nigeria, LANA said, quoting immigration officials.

Many migrants from sub-Saharan Africa head to this oil producing country to escape from desperate conditions in their own countries and find work here, or risk the perilous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe. […]“

So ganz genau kann der italienische Innenminister Angelino Alfano es nicht sagen. Aber die Monsterzahl hat er schon mal in die Welt gesetzt. Alfano berief sich auf Berechnungen seiner Geheimdienste. Geheimdiensten aber sollte man nicht trauen, aus Prinzip und aus Erfahrung nicht.

„Libya’s coastguard detains more than 400 immigrants en route to Europe

(Reuters) – Libya’s coastguard has detained more than 400 immigrants, mostly from the Horn of Africa, in its waters in the past two days as they tried to illegally cross to Europe in small boats, Libyan officials said on Thursday.

The coastguard picked up five boatloads of people. Warning shots were fired at several vessels, and 78 people were rescued from a sinking ship, said navy spokesman Qassem Ayoub.
