A 4-year-old child was reported drowned in the early hours of Tuesday as she and 28 fellow passengers tried to swim to the shore of Rho, a small islet off the coast of Kastellorizo in the southeastern Aegean.

The coast guard says it was able to rescue the other 28 passengers on board the craft that had set sail from Turkey as they tried to reach Europe, but the young girl drowned in the final scramble.

Greek coast guard officers have rescued over 200 refugees and migrants from Greece’s seas since Monday.

Thousands of migrants arrived on Greek islands on Monday, just a day after Turkey pledged to help curb an influx of people heading through its territory to Europe via Greece at a landmark European Union summit.

After a lull of a few days, the number of arrivals picked up again over the weekend with more than 5,000 people arriving on Lesvos alone in the past two days, fueling concern among authorities who remain ill-equipped to handle the influx.

At least six children lost their lives during two separate efforts of migrants and refugees to cross from the Turkish shores to the Greek islands.

In one of the two incidents, one boat transporting migrants and refugees capsized on its way to the Greek island of Lesvos, leaving four Afghan children dead, with their bodies washing up on the Turkish shore of the Ayvacik region. ANA-MPA reports that the remaining 51 Afghan and Syrian passengers were rescued by the Turkish coast guard.

Mazedonische Soldaten errichten an der Grenze zu Griechenland einen Metallzaun. Nicht mehr alle Flüchtlinge können ins Land kommen. Die Abgewiesenen wollen das nicht akzeptieren. Einige werden gewalttätig.

Beim Bau eines Grenzzauns an der mazedonischen Grenze ist es wohl zu gewaltsamen Zwischenfällen gekommen. Nach Angaben mazedonischer Medien in Skopje, die sich auf das mazedonische Innenministerium berufen haben abgewiesene Migranten Polizisten mit Steinen angegriffen, weil sie ihnen die Einreise aus Griechenland verwehrt hatten. Daraufhin habe die mazedonische Polizei die Angreifer unter Einsatz von Tränengas zurückgedrängt. Dabei sind am Samstag wohl 18 Polizisten verletzt worden – die Zahl der verletzten Flüchtlinge ist noch unbekannt.

IDOMENI, Greece/SKOPJE, Nov 28 (Reuters) – Soldiers in Macedonia began erecting a metal fence on Saturday on the country’s southern border with Greece, but the government said it had no plans to seal off access to refugees fleeing war and heading to western Europe.

Soldiers drove metal poles around 3 metres high into the cold, muddy ground, building a barrier similar to that erected by Hungary on its southern border to keep out the hundreds of thousands of migrants who have crossed the Balkans this year.

A migrant holds his crying child after crossing the border from Greece to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, on Friday, as weather conditions across the region took a turn for the worse.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Friday emphasized Greece’s decisive role in managing a refugee crisis, declaring that the country is “guarding the European Union’s borders.”

Tsipras’s comments, made to state television channel ERT3, came as pressure grows on Greece due to an influx of migrants arriving on Aegean islands from Turkey.

“Greece is making a multifaceted effort to tackle the refugee crisis,” Tsipras said, adding that the country is “honoring its European obligations to create centers for the reception and identification of refugees.”

Es war eine eher unscheinbare Maßnahme, doch sie löste eine Kettenreaktion aus: In der vergangenen Woche setzten slowenische Polizisten an der Grenze zu Kroatien 162 Marokkaner fest und verweigerten ihnen die Weiterreise nach Österreich. Begründung: Sie seien Wirtschaftsmigranten und hätten keine Chance auf Asyl in Europa, daher werde man sie wieder nach Kroatien abschieben.

Hundreds of migrants and refugees tried to force their way past in an attempt to enter Macedonia

Violent clashes broke out on the Greek-Macedonian border when hundreds of migrants tried to force their way past the Macedonian police and army into Macedonia.

Migrants, angry at being stuck in Idomeni for weeks, threw rocks and bottles at the Macedonian police, and pulled apart the razor wire marking the border between Greece and Macedonia.
