UNHCR is today releasing a report on the current situation of asylum in Greece. The report commends Greece for reforms it has undertaken during a period of economic difficulties and limited resources. But it also points to multiple gaps and concerns and carries a recommendation that asylum-seekers should still not be returned there.

The police, who had for many years been stationed at the main streets leading into the Athenian neighbourhood of Exarchia, has withdrawn today. The fences around the parliament, which were both the symbolical as well as material limits of the movements against austerity and memorandum politics of the last five years, have been taken away today as the press was taking pictures of the new government. That many people who had been fired over the last years have been re-instated, is however not symbolic anymore, but an important vindication of the resistance that has been put up, despite waning hope that the memorandum politics could be reversed.

Some 200 Syrian refugees living in tents in the Kokkinotrimithia reception centre have been left to fend mostly for themselves after the state services stopped providing support on Saturday afternoon.
More than three months after their rescue in rough seas off the coast of Cyprus en route to Italy, the refugees were informed by the interior ministry earlier in the month that the camp was to close down. They were urged to take the necessary action to legalise their status on the island, either by applying for asylum or for a temporary residence permit.

Heute hat ein Anwaltsteam Klage vor dem Europäischen Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte gegen Griechenland eingereicht. Drei Frauen und acht Kinder aus Afghanistan starben vor genau einem Jahr am 20. Januar 2014, als ihr Boot im Schlepptau der griechischen Küstenwache vor der Insel Farmakonisi sank. PRO ASYL geht von einer völlig entglittenen Push-Back-Operation aus. In der Klageschrift wird vor allem eine Verletzung des Artikels 2 (Recht auf Leben) der Europäischen Menschenrechtskonvention geltend gemacht.

Italy – The spectre of large, disposable crafts bearing hundreds of migrants across dangerous waters in the new year was borne out in terrifying fashion this past week as more than 1,000 migrants, most fleeing Syria, had to be rescued in the Mediterranean Sea.
According to survivors’ accounts, the crews of both vessels deliberately abandoned men, women and children aboard, setting courses for the Italian coastline despite the very real possibility that hundreds might drown.
