Since this morning, in Lampedusa many Erithreans are protesting one more time because they refuse to leave their fingerprints and thus to apply for asylum in Italy. We strongly support their protest, and we wish to opens a reflection on a few other issues:

  1. The regularization of the journeys and the possibility of travelling safely and to any destination.
  2. Once again we need to ask ourselves: why do these people have decided to leave their own countries? What is the role of the Western Governments in the destablization of entire geographical areas, in the weapons’ sale and production, in the historical robbery of resources in the “third world”?
  3. The third issue is related to Lampedusa: why this small island must be subject to such political, social and mediatic pression? Although Lampedusa has received medals and International award and it was even candidate for the Nobel Prize for Peace, it still has uninhabitable schools, a very precarious healthcare, a very expensive and difficult connection with the mainland, a wholly militarized territory and many more problems.

The 18 of November 2015, all the borders from Slovenia to Macedonia-FYROM closed for those that weren’t Syrian, Afghan or Iraqi refugees. The others had been forgotten and stranded at this border for 22 days.

Many deaths in the Aegean Sea and hundreds stuck on Greek Military Island

In the past two weeks, the Alarm Phone witnessed again the deadly consequences of the EU’s border regime, which increasingly foster suffering and despair throughout Europe’s border zone. While attempts to cross the Aegean Sea are on a constant high despite the seasonal weather conditions, with about 25.000 people arriving in Greece per week,[i] more and more sea crossings turn into fatal accidents. In the last two weeks, we were informed about or directly witnessed at least 7 maritime accidents, with more than one hundred deaths, including many children.

Not least due to the EU-enforced presence of Turkish police forces at the coast, travellers are forced to take ever more lengthy and dangerous routes, like for instance in the direction of the Greek island of Farmakonisi, where most of last weeks’ shipwrecks occurred.

Bei sechs Einsätzen vor der italienischen Küste konnten Hunderte Flüchtlinge geborgen werden. 150.000 Migranten haben in diesem Jahr auf dem Seeweg Italien erreicht.

Die italienische Küstenwache hat 751 Bootsflüchtlinge gerettet. Sie seien bei sechs verschiedenen Operationen im Mittelmeer geborgen worden, teilte die Behörde auf Twitter mit. Insgesamt wurden damit nach Angaben der Küstenwache seit Anfang der Woche mehr als 2.100 Bootsflüchtlinge im Mittelmeer zwischen Nordafrika und Italien in Sicherheit gebracht.

Die Polizei in Marokko bemüht sich seit Monaten, Flüchtlinge von den Grenzen zu den spanischen Nordafrika-Exklaven Melilla und Ceuta fernzuhalten. Jetzt kam es in Ceuta erstmals seit längerer Zeit wieder zu einem Massenansturm auf spanisches Gebiet. Zwei Menschen starben.

Die spanischen Exklaven Ceuta und Melilla im nordafrikanischen Marokko sind seit den 1990er- Jahren mit meterhohen Zäunen umgeben. Polizisten sichern das Gebiet. Dennoch versuchen immer wieder verzweifelte Flüchtlinge, die Zäune zu überwinden und die Festung Europa zu erreichen.

Jetzt kam es in Ceuta erstmals seit Monaten wieder zu einem Massenansturm auf spanisches Gebiet. Wie die staatliche Nachrichtenagentur Efe berichtete, waren etwa 250 afrikanische Flüchtlinge beteiligt, 185 soll die Flucht geglückt sein. Ein Teil der Flüchtlinge war von marokkanischem Gebiet aus über die Grenzzäune geklettert. Ein anderer Teil schwamm im Meer um die Grenzbefestigungen herum. Dabei ertranken zwei Menschen auf marokkanischer Seite. Zwölf Flüchtlinge erlitten schwere Verletzungen.

Auf dem Weg zur griechischen Insel Lesbos ist erneut ein Flüchtlingsboot gekentert. Mindestens 18 Menschen ertranken, sechs der Todesopfer waren Kinder. Ein einjähriges Baby konnte gerettet werden.

In einem Holzboot waren sie auf dem Weg zur griechischen Insel Lesbos, doch es kenterte in hohen Wellen: Bei dem Unglück vor der türkischen Küste sind mindestens 18 Flüchtlinge ums Leben gekommen, darunter sechs Kinder, berichtet die türkische Nachrichtenagentur Dogan. 14 Flüchtlinge werden demnach noch vermisst. Ein einjähriges Baby konnte gerettet werden.

Italien hat nach Kritik der EU an der schleppenden Registrierung von Bootsflüchtlingen ein zweites Aufnahmezentrum eingerichtet.

Dieser sogenannte „Hotspot“ liege in Trapani auf Sizilien, teilte Innenminister Alfano in Rom mit. Weitere Zentren sollen in den nächsten Tagen in Pozzallo auf Sizilien und in Tarent in Apulien öffnen. Bisher gab es nur ein italienisches Aufnahmezentrum auf der Mittelmeerinsel Lampedusa. Eigentlich sollten bis Jahresende in Italien sechs solcher Zentren eingerichtet werden.

In diesem Jahr trafen rund 150.000 Flüchtlinge auf dem Seeweg in Italien ein, rund 20.000 weniger als im Vorjahr. Mehr als 820.000 kamen in Griechenland an. Nach Angaben des UNO-Flüchtlingshilfswerks erreichten insgesamt mehr als eine Million Flüchtlinge in diesem Jahr die Europäische Union.

Thousands of refugees are continuing to board boats to Europe everyday despite the worsening winter weather

At Emre’s boat shop in central Izmir, one of Turkey’s main ports, you can’t turn around without bumping into a pile of inflatable rubber boats. On this day there are 16 stacked in beige boxes, all numbered with the same inscrutable code, SK-800PLY, and all newly delivered from China. If Emre’s maths is right, all of them will be discarded on a Greek beach within a couple of days. For Emre’s shop is where you can buy boats that take refugees to Europe – and where they are still being sold at a rate of nearly a dozen a day.

“In the summer we were selling more,” Emre tells a potential Syrian customer. “But right now we’re still selling six of the cheaper boats every day, and five of the more expensive ones. How many do you want?”

On Greek island’s north coast, activists have launched their own humanitarian operation. But the welcome is less warm at the registration centres in the south

In the hills high above the north coast of Lesbos, an incongruous mass of orange surges for hundreds of metres across a craggy plateau. It could be the crater of a seething volcano. But this is not lava.

On Tuesday, the number of asylum seekers to reach Europe this year passed 1 million. Nearly half of them did so via the beaches of this Greek island – and the eerie hilltop is where the residents of Lesbos have piled hundreds of thousands of their discarded orange lifejackets. Elsewhere, the islanders are building a second graveyard to house the bodies of the drowned. This silent swath of orange – 3.7 metres (1 ft) tall in places, and rolling like the sea – is just as apt a tombstone for the scale and tragedy of the European refugee crisis.
