Rival ethnic groups clash in Piraeus and 800 break out of detention centre on Chios as EU deal brings desperation

The Greek government is bracing itself for violence ahead of the European Union implementing a landmark deal that, from Monday, will see Syrian refugees and migrants being deported back to Turkey en masse.

Rioting and rebellion by thousands of entrapped refugees across Greece has triggered mounting fears in Athens over the practicality of enforcing an agreement already marred by growing concerns over its legality. Islands have become flashpoints, with as many as 800 people breaking out of a detention centre on Chios on Friday.

Some 750 migrants are set to be sent back between Monday and Wednesday from the island of Lesbos to the Turkish port of Dikili.

We are a group of 13 people from different countries, almost all living in Germany. We speak a lot of different languages, e.g. Arabic, English, Farsi, Dari, French, German, Kurdish, Pashto, Urdu, and Turkish. Most of us met during the self-organized refugee struggles in Bavaria, or in other anti-racist contexts. Most members of our collective came to Germany as migrants from Non-Western countries.

All members of our collective believe in freedom of movement for everybody and the right to choose to go where people want, whenever they want. We believe that for this to become true, it is necessary to provide reliable and trustworthy information for migrants: About their journey to and through Europe, and on the asylum system in EU member states.

That’s why we are planning to travel through Greece for two weeks, from the 24th of March to the 8th of April. We aim at meeting people on the ground, in order to provide them with information through leaflets in different languages. We will also have info panels on the bus, displaying maps and legal advices about Greece, the destination and transit countries. Most of us have also experienced the situation of coming to Germany as a refugee and are able to share this with people who aim at going there.

ATHENS, Greece — On April 4, hundreds of migrants who arrived on the Greek islands in the past 10 days will be sent back across the Aegean Sea to Turkey, to the shores they departed from in hopes of finding refuge in Europe.

Monday’s returns will be the first deportations made as part of a controversial deal between Turkey and the European Union to halt migration flows to the continent, much to the outrage of humanitarian groups and the despair of migrants fleeing war and extreme poverty.

Human rights groups have said the deal may be illegal if refugees are not given fair opportunities to seek asylum, or are returned to countries where they will not be safe. Aid groups, humanitarian organizations and government officials have questioned whether the deal is even possible to implement practically; they doubt Greece’s capacity to fairly process thousands of asylum claims, house and return migrants, and send them back across the Aegean Sea, considering the country’s own dire financial crisis.

Wien kündigt drastische Kontrollen am Brenner an – mit militärischer Hilfe. Und der Verteidigungsminister legt nach: Eine „zivil-militärische EU-Mission“ wäre auch in Griechenland sinnvoll.

Das in der Flüchtlingspolitik mit Deutschland im Clinch liegende Österreich will seine Grenze am Brenner künftig verstärkt mit Soldaten schützen. Auch der jüngst ausgehandelte Deal mit der Türkei ändert daran zunächst nichts.

Österreichs Verteidigungsminister Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) sagte der „Welt“: „Da die EU-Außengrenzen derzeit noch nicht effektiv geschützt werden, wird Österreich in Kürze strikte Grenzkontrollen hochziehen. Das bedeutet massive Grenzkontrollen am Brenner, auch mit Soldaten“.

The Greek Parliament on Friday night approved a bill that introduces the necessary legal and administrative changes for the government to be in a position to start implementing the recent agreement between the European Union and Turkey on the return and resettlement of refugees from next week.

The legislation was backed by PASOK and To Potami, as well as coalition partners SYRIZA and Independent Greeks when the “in principle” vote was held, giving the bill 169 “yes” votes against 107 “no” votes. New Democracy voted in favor of some of the draft law’s articles when MPs were asked to vote on each component of the bill.

Sofortiger Einsatz der freien Eisenbahn-Kapazitäten der Deutschen Bahn AG auf der Verbindung Athen – Thessaloniki – Berlin

Die Lage für die mehr als 50.000 Flüchtlinge, die in Griechenland gestrandet sind – darunter mehr als 10.000 in Idomeni auf den Feldern am Grenzzaun – spitzt sich in diesen Tagen auf drei Ebenen zu:

  • Erstens weil es in Griechenland nicht genügend Übernachtungen und Plätze für Flüchtlinge gibt und die Camps auf den Inseln zunehmend den Charakter von Haftanstalten annehmen.
  • Zweitens weil Griechenland von der EU und insbesondere von der Regierung in Berlin massiv unter Druck gesetzt wird, die Türkei als „sicheres Drittland“ anzuerkennen, um unmittelbar im Anschluss Abschiebungen im großen Stil durchzuführen.
  • Drittens weil die Türkei Tag für Tag dokumentiert, dass sie nicht gewillt ist, die Menschenrechte umfänglich zu respektieren und ihrerseits Flüchtlinge an den Grenzen abweist, im Land selbst inhaftiert und viele wieder abschiebt – auch in Länder, in denen ihnen Tod und Folter droht.

Das griechische Parlament hat über die Umsetzung des Flüchtlingspakts der EU mit der Türkei abgestimmt. Wichtigster Bestandteil ist die Rechtmäßigkeit der geplanten Rückführungen von Migranten.

Das griechische Parlament hat den Weg für die Rückführung von Migranten und Flüchtlingen aus Griechenland in die Türkei geebnet. Ein Gesetz zur Umsetzung des Flüchtlingspakts der EU mit der Türkei wurde mit einer klaren Mehrheit verabschiedet. 169 Abgeordnete votierten dafür, 107 dagegen. Dies teilte das Parlamentspräsidium mit.

Die Übereinkunft sieht vor, dass alle Flüchtlinge, die nach dem 20. März illegal von der Türkei nach Griechenland übergesetzt sind, dann zwangsweise zurückgebracht werden können. Vorher haben die Menschen jedoch das Recht auf eine Einzelfallprüfung in Griechenland.

Dramatische Szenen in Griechenland: In einem Lager auf der Insel Chios liefern sich Flüchtlinge Schlägereien und durchbrechen einen Zaun. Deutschland erwartet derweil die ersten offiziell eingeflogenen Syrer aus der Türkei.

Deutschland will am Montag die ersten Syrer aus der Türkei als reguläre Flüchtlinge einfliegen lassen. Dabei handele es sich vor allem um Familien mit Kindern, sagte ein Sprecher des Bundesinnenministeriums am Freitag der Deutschen Presse-Agentur in Berlin. Es gehe um eine Anzahl von Menschen in einer „niedrigen bis mittleren zweistelligen Größenordnung“, die im niedersächsischen Friedland ankommen sollen. Am Montag soll auch die im EU-Türkei-Pakt vereinbarte Rückführung von Migranten von den griechischen Inseln in die Türkei beginnen.

Greece – At least 170,000 migrants and refugees have entered Europe along sea-borne routes through the first three months of 2016, according to calculations by the International Organization for Migration. This unofficial tally is based on arrivals to Italy reported late Thursday, as well as several hundred migrants and refugees believed to have entered Europe via Spanish waters during the course of 2016.

The 170,000 total is more than eight times the number – 20,700 – recorded through the first three months of 2015, a year when a record one million migrants and refugees crossed the Mediterranean.
