In Südfrankreich öffnen Dorfbewohner ihre Häuser für Flüchtlinge. Vier über Sechzigjährige stehen deshalb nun vor Gericht. Sie fühlen sich vom Staat kriminalisiert.

Als am Neujahrstag Schneeregen fiel und die Flüchtlinge in Flipflops zum Dorfplatz kamen, zögerte Françoise Gogois keine Sekunde: Sie nahm drei von ihnen bei sich im Haus auf, gelegen im Roya-Tal nahe der französisch-italienischen Grenze. Wenige Tage später brachte sie mit Bekannten sechs Geflüchtete über einen Bergwanderweg in die Nachbarstadt – zwei Minderjährige, eine Frau und drei Männer aus Eritrea. Sie wollten weiterziehen, zu Bekannten in Paris und Deutschland.

Kurz hinter dem Gipfel wurden sie von französischen Gendarmen festgenommen, die ihnen Beihilfe zum illegalen Aufenthalt vorwarfen. Nun stehen die in Frankreich als „Flüchtlings-Omas und -Opas“ bekannten Rentner in Aix-en-Provence vor dem Berufungsgericht. Erneut, denn die Staatsanwaltschaft in Nizza hatte ihren Freispruch vom Sommer angefochten.

Aid workers are being targeted throughout Europe as countries including the UK use laws aimed at traffickers and smugglers to discourage humanitarian activity, a study claims.

A six-month investigation by the London-based Institute of Race Relations documented the prosecutions of 45 individual “humanitarian actors” under anti-smuggling or immigration laws in 26 separate actions over the past two years. Examples include a 25-year-old British volunteer with a refugee support group, who last January sought to bring an Albanian mother and two children to the UK in the boot of her car so they could join their husband and father.

Since the blockage of the Roya valley (France), more and more people are taking the route of the Alps. In the Briançonnais region (France), more than one thousand migrants have been welcomed by volunteers since the end of july 2017. By the lack of reaction of the public authorities, the inhabitants are worried about dramas the winter could cause. They organize themselves, like the people of the Roya valley before them, to welcome, as good as possible, the newcomers, mainly African.

Sur la route des Alpes (1/2): à Briançon, des montagnards solidaires des migrants

Depuis le blocage de la vallée de la Roya, ils sont de plus en plus nombreux à emprunter la route des Alpes. Dans le Briançonnais, plus de 1 000 migrants ont été accueillis par des bénévoles depuis fin juillet 2017. Devant l’absence de réaction des pouvoirs publics, les habitants s’inquiètent des drames que risque de provoquer l’hiver. Et s’organisent, comme avant eux ceux de la vallée de la Roya, pour accueillir au mieux les arrivants, majoritairement africains.

‘Sorry, please one cigarette, my friend.” The man is young: early 20s at the most, Syrian I think. He and many others from across the Middle East and Africa patrol Exarchia Square in central Athens. Bereft of work, they beg for change. Often they turn to selling pirated DVDs, tissues or, occasionally, drugs.

The great migration wave of 2015 saw around a million people make asylum requests in the 28 EU states. The UN high commissioner for refugees was clear on the severity of the situation: since the second world war, he said, there have never been so many refugees, asylum seekers and displaced people. And still they are coming. According to the European commission, the number of people seeking asylum from non-EU countries in the EU28 during the first quarter of 2017 reached 164,500.

Cédric Herrou ist der Fahnenträger der Flüchtlingshelfer in Frankreich. Der 38-jährige Biobauer lebt im Roya-Tal an der italienischen Grenze auf einem abgelegenen Landgut mit 800 Olivenbäumen. Weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus ist er schon bekannt, weil er – zusammen mit andern – Hunderten von Migranten aus Afrika geholfen hat, nach Frankreich zu gelangen und im Land zu bleiben. Er hat ihnen Unterkunft und Verpflegung geboten, auch bei der Weiterfahrt und bei Behördenkontakten geholfen. Allerdings hat er dabei die Grenzen der französischen Gesetze gebrochen, wie ein neues Gerichtsurteil bestätigt. Vier Monate Gefängnis drohen ihm, falls er seine Hilfe nicht sofort einstellt.

Il contadino francese che aiuta i migranti Cedric Herrou, insieme all’eurodeputato ecologista José Bové, il 24 luglio ha accompagnato oltre 200 migranti provenienti dalla Val Roya a Nizza perché chiedessero asilo in Francia. Circa 120 hanno poi preso il treno per raggiungere Marsiglia, ma sono stati fermati alla stazione di Cannes con un maxi-blitz della polizia che li ha portati al posto di frontiera di Menton Garavan, al confine tra Francia e Italia, quindi riconsegnati al nostro Paese. Herrou è invece finito in una cella di sicurezza del commissariato di Cannes. Fermato il 24 sera, dovrebbe essere rilasciato nelle prossime ore.

Hundreds of Greek protesters and refugees have demonstrated in Athens to voice opposition to a court’s ruling to empty out squats, several of which provide residence to refugees and migrants.

Marching from the City Plaza refugee squat in central Athens, around 700 people made the trek to the Ministry of Migration building in the capital’s Klafthmonos Square on Friday.

They chanted in support of squats and their residents, carrying signs that read „City Plaza is our home“ and „Hands off squats“.

Das Start-up „mimycri“ macht aus Fluchtbooten schicke Taschen. Hier erklären die Berliner Gründerinnen die Idee

Sie kommen beide nicht aus der Modebranche, sondern aus der Politik. Dennoch beschäftigen sich Nora Azzaoui und Vera Günther derzeit tagein, tagaus mit einem Thema: Designer-Taschen. Gemeinsam mit Geflüchteten gestalten sie unter dem Markennamen „mimycri“ modische Beutel und Rucksäcke. Der Erlös soll es Geflüchteten ermöglichen, sich hier eine Existenz aufzubauen – Menschen wie dem syrischen Architekten Hassan Abou Saada, der eine lebensgefährliche Flucht übers Mittelmeer hinter sich hat und nun zum Berliner Mimycri-Team gehört, so wie Modedesigner, Schneider, Innovationsberater und Umweltökonomen aus verschiedenen anderen Ländern.

Das Besondere – für manche auch das Schockierende – an den Taschen: Sie sind aus Schlauchbooten gemacht, mit denen Geflüchtete unterwegs waren. Dafür bekamen die Gründerinnen einige Kritik zu hören. Doch sie verteidigen ihre Idee. Beide Frauen haben das internationale Fach „Public Policy“ studiert. Vera Günther, 30, beschäftigt sich in ihrem Hauptjob bei den UN mit Lösungen für den Ressourcenmangel, die Innovationsberaterin Nora Azzaoui, 29, findet, man müsse die Kenntnisse und Tricks aus dem Feld der Unternehmensberatung viel öfter auch auf soziale Themen übertragen.
