Abstract

Background

Pushed by ongoing conflicts and pulled by the desire for a better life, over one million migrants/refugees transited Balkan countries and arrived in Europe during 2015 and early 2016. To curb this influx, European countries instituted restrictive migration policies often characterized by building of razor-wire border fences and border closures. Among migrants/refugees who received mental health care in Serbia while travelling through Balkan countries to Northern Europe, we assessed the prevalence and patterns of violent events experienced including physical trauma.

Methods

A mixed methods study among migrants/refugees attending mobile mental health clinics run by Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) between July 2015 and June 2016, in Serbia – a main transit hub to European countries. Clinics were conducted according to MSF guidelines by experienced psychologists who were supported by cultural mediators. The main outcome measures were violent events and associated physical trauma.

Der Streit über die von Milliardär Soros gegründete Universität in Ungarn reißt nicht ab. Ungarns Staatschef Orbán lastet dem Amerikaner nun sogar an, der europäischen Flüchtlingskrise finanziell Vorschub zu leisten.

Seit Wochen führt der ungarische Ministerpräsident Viktor Orbán eine Kampagne gegen regierungskritische Zivilorganisationen sowie den US-Milliardär George Soros. Nun legt er in einem Interview der regierungsnahen Tageszeitung „Magyar Idök“ vom Samstag weiter nach – und stellt eine Verbindung zwischen dem Streit über die von Soros gegründete Central European University (CEU) in Budapest und der Flüchtlingskrise her.

„Die ganze Sache dreht sich darum“, erklärte der rechtskonservative Regierungschef, „dass George Soros, vor der Öffentlichkeit verborgen und unter Einbeziehung seiner ungarischen Organisationen, mit enormen Geldern die illegale Einwanderung fördert.“

As borders have tightened along the western Balkan route to Europe, more lone female refugees are arriving in Serbia having experienced violence and trafficking. Many who want to continue their journeys are using even riskier routes and never appear in official data.

BELGRADE – Like many female refugees, Maryam would rather speak about other women who have fled their countries than share her own story. “We have come to the point of no return,” said the mother in her late 20s, tears rolling down her cheeks. “We women have endured a lot.”

It was February in Belgrade, and the Afghan refugee had just crossed over the border with Kosovo. She trudged to the Serbian capital in the thick of the winter, taking turns with her husband to carry their two children.

As she absorbed her unfamiliar surroundings, it dawned on Maryam how far she was from her Kandahar home; she began to convulse in panic. She regained her composure and apologized profusely. “I must not reveal any weakness in front of my children,” she said.

The family’s convoluted route to Europe started in the summer of 2015. They crossed the border to Iran and trekked to the Turkish coast. They crossed the Aegean Sea to Greece, before traveling northward through Albania, then Kosovo and Serbia, hoping to pass through Hungary and finally reach Austria.

Serbian authorities have detained 20 migrants in the north of the country while up to another 200 were rounded up and sent to a camp in the south, a government official said on Tuesday.

„Twenty people have been taken in for questioning,“ the official who asked not to be named told Reuters without elaborating further.

He added the other migrants were taken away from in and around Sid in three buses to a camp in Presevo, near the Macedonian border in the south.

  • Die EU müsse dafür Sorge tragen, dass völkerrechtliche Verpflichtungen in Europa eingehalten werden, fordern die NGOs.

Gewalt, Brutalität und unrechtmäßiger Behandlung prägen die Erfahrung von Flüchtlingen auf der so genannten Balkanroute: Ein am Donnerstag von mehreren Nichtregierungsorganisationen (NGOs) in Berlin vorgelegter Bericht dokumentiert zahlreiche Schicksale.

Viele Flüchtlinge wurden demnach von Polizisten geschlagen, ausgeraubt und unmenschlich behandelt. Sie hatten zudem keinen Zugang zu einem fairen Asylverfahren, vielfach kam es zu Sammelausweisungen. Die drei NGOs – Oxfam, das Belgrader Menschenrechtszentrum (BCHR) und der Mazedonische Verband junger Anwälte (MYLA) – fordern Serbien, Mazedonien, Kroatien, Ungarn und Bulgarien auf, menschenrechtliche Standards einzuhalten. Die EU müsse dafür Sorge tragen, dass völkerrechtliche Verpflichtungen in Europa eingehalten werden.

When arriving in Athens at the beginning of August 2015, I was still thinking about the Euro-crisis and the developments in Greece. Just about a month before, an overwhelming majority of the Greek population had rejected the measures proposed by the EU Commission, and just a few days later, the Syriza-ANEL-government conceded to an agreement, which followed from the notorious marathon-summit in Brussels and which imposed even harsher measures than those rejected by the referendum. The roller-coaster ride of the last six months – from the election victory of Syriza in January 2015 via the preliminary agreement on February 20, when both the Greek state’s finances and the perceived window of opportunity were rapidly shrinking, up to the referendum and the imposition of the third memorandum – had come to a crashing halt. It seemed like an utter defeat of a left and democratic project in, and for Europe. I expected the social movements to be apathetic and paralysed. Weiterlesen »

A public push is needed to stop refugee and migrant deaths on the western Balkans route.

IRR News continues its investigation into violations and deaths at EU borders, focusing on seven deaths in the Serbian, Hungarian and Bulgarian border zones.

All the official reports, photographic evidence, testimonies and case studies are there. Fresh Response Serbia, the Migrant Solidarity Group of Hungary (Migszol), Belgrade Centre for Human Rights (BCHR), Hungarian Helsinki Committee, Doctors Without Borders, Are You Syrious (AYS), Moving Europe, Centre for Peace Studies, Jesuit Refugee Service, Amnesty International, Save the Children, Human Rights Watch, these and countless other NGOs and activists have tirelessly documented a pattern of violation and abuse by border guards, military personnel and vigilantes, at Serbia’s borders with Hungary, Bulgaria and Croatia.

The Institute of Race Relations (IRR), which keeps a record of migrant and refugee deaths in Europe in an attempt to ‘memorialise death and restore full humanity to those who have died’,[1] has noted seven deaths over the last year in Serbia, and at the border zones with Hungary and Bulgaria.[2] An estimated 8-9,000 refugees are currently stranded in Serbia, many of whom have survived the winter, when temperatures plummeted to -20C, camping in abandoned warehouses behind the main train station in Belgrade. One 18-year-old Afghan boy did not make it through the winter. In November 2016, his frozen and malnourished body was discovered in an abandoned industrial building in Bulgaria, very close to the Serbian border. Two others whose deaths were recorded, an unnamed Afghan and an unnamed Pakistani man, were walking in dangerous areas close to unofficial makeshift migrant settlements when they were knocked down by vehicles. While the Afghan man, the victim of a hit-and- run, died close to Belgrade, the Pakistani man died close to the Horgoš transit zone, on the Serbian side of the border with Hungary, in a field which is only accessible by walking along a highway and across a small dirt road.

Offiziell ist die Balkanroute geschlossen, doch im neuen Jahr erreichen anscheinend Tausende Flüchtlinge auf diesem Wege Deutschland. Die meisten stammen einem Bericht zufolge aus Syrien und Afghanistan, doch das könnte sich bald ändern.

Trotz verschärfter Grenzkontrollen in Europa überqueren einem Medienbericht zufolge noch immer täglich Dutzende Migranten illegal die deutsche Grenze. Die Bundespolizei habe in den ersten zwei Monaten dieses Jahres 8758 unerlaubte Einreisen registriert und zur Anzeige gebracht, berichtete das Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland unter Berufung auf Behördenangaben. Insgesamt seien die Zahlen seit einem Jahr aber rückläufig. Im gesamten Jahr 2016 registrierte die Bundespolizei dem Bericht zufolge 167.500 illegale Einreisen.
