„We don’t want food, we don’t want water, we don’t want humanitarian help, we want to cross the border by the land. We will cross or die here.“

PRESS RELEASE: Since 5 days in Edirne, Turkey, around 3000 thousands migrants (mostly syrians but also afghanis, irakis and others) gathered, following a call started on a Facebook page („Crossing no more“), to ask for the turkish-greek border to be opened for them. They refuse to risk their lives in Aegean sea anymore to reach a european country where they’ll finally be safe, get basic human rights and have a chance to make a life for themselves. VideoPeople started to move to Edirne last weekend (around the 10th of September) but very quickly the main bus station of Istanbul (Bayrampaşa) where they were allbuying tickets and getting on the buses got blocked for them. The policedetains them in the bus station itself, preventing them to buy tickets to Edirne. The government declared that now the migrants have to stay in the citywhere they had been registered on turkish territory. Which means that it’s nowofficially illegal for them to move inside the country, especially to Edirne.

Borders are closing all over Europe and many people are likely to end up stuck in camps in Greece. A proper European resettlement deal is needed, experts say

Europe’s heads of government gather this week for a meeting billed as a last-ditch effort to resolve the refugee crisis sweeping the continent.

But the pace of arrivals has accelerated so fast that the deal some are touting as a solution to the challenge is actually more of a stopgap measure to tackle an emergency.

Politicians in Brussels have been arguing fiercely about where 120,000 refugees should be allowed to settle, even though tens of thousands more have already travelled into the continent. Borders are being sealed with bewildering speed, as columns of desperate people move from country to country in their attempt to find a haven.

Die Insel Lesbos ist beliebtes Ziel zehntausender Flüchtlinge vor allem aus Syrien und Afghanistan. Die griechische Küstenwache berichtet von einem neuen großen Unglück in der Ägäis.

26 Migranten werden vermisst, die Aussichten ihr Leben zu retten sind gering. Wieder ist ein Flüchtlingsboot unweit der griechischen Insel Lesbos in der Ägäis gesunken, wie die Küstenwache mitteilte. 20 Menschen seien hingegen aus Seenot geborgen worden. Ein litauischer Hubschrauber der Frontex-Patrouille der EU habe die Menschen im Morgengrauen in den Fluten entdeckt.

Erst am Vortag war ein fünfjähriges Kind bei einem ähnlichen Unglück ums Leben gekommen. Hier wurden 13 Menschen vermisst.

Una bimba di pochi mesi, figlia di migranti siriani, gattona verso il cordone della polizia che sbarra il passaggio ai profughi sull’autostrada Istanbul-Edirne. La scena è stata immortalata dai fotografi presenti ed è diventata immediatamente virale sui social network. Insieme alla bimba, una folla di migranti attende che le forze dell’ordine li lasci oltrepassare il confine con la Grecia.

Vor einigen Wochen wurde Gevgelija schlagartig zum Symbol für das komplette Scheitern der europäischen Flüchtlingspolitik. Die Bilder aus der mazedonischen Kleinstadt direkt an der Grenze zu Griechenland gingen um die Welt. Zu sehen waren tausende Flüchtlinge, die verzweifelt versuchten, von einem total überfüllten Bahnsteig aus einen der raren Plätze in einem der regulären Züge Richtung Serbien zu ergattern. Mittlerweile ist die Situation deutlich entspannter. Dies nicht etwa, weil hier nun weniger Flüchtlinge die Grenze passieren – ganz im Gegenteil, es sind nach wie vor Tausende jeden Tag – sondern weil dies nun staatlich organisiert vonstatten geht. D.h. weder die griechische Polizei noch die mazedonische Polizei behindert den irregulären Grenzübertritt, sondern toleriert bzw. unterstützt diesen sogar aktiv.

A girl believed to be five years old died and as many as 13 migrants may be missing at sea off the Greek island of Lesvos on Saturday, the Greek coastguard said.

Nikos Lagkadianos, a coastguard spokesman, said 11 people were rescued from the sea between Lesvos and Turkey and one swam ashore in the early hours. The survivors said they thought 13 of their number were missing.

The girl was found unconscious and was declared dead later at hospital, Lagkadianos said.

Several hundred migrants who were blocked by police in northwest Turkey from crossing a land border to Greece this week drew a few kilometres closer to their destination Friday after the authorities briefly opened the route.

There were jubilant scenes as the crowd of mostly Syrian refugees who have been camping at the side of the road outside the city of Edirne for four days, began to advance towards the border.

Chanting and whistling, faces wreathed in smiles, the refugees surged forward after the riot police that stood between them and the last leg of their journey to the EU turned on their heels and led the group down the road.

Neues Sondertreffen der Innenminister und ausserordentlicher EU-Gipfel zur Flüchtlingskrise angesetzt

Die Innenminister könnten noch vor einem Gipfel der EU-Regierungschefs über die Flüchtlingsquote entscheiden. Zentren, in denen Flüchtlinge registriert werden sollen, lösen derweil Verwirrung aus.

Die geplante Umsiedlung von 120 000 Flüchtlingen innerhalb der EU ist einen Schritt nähergerückt. Das Europaparlament, das zum entsprechenden Rechtsakt angehört werden muss, hat sich am Donnerstag in einer dringlichen Abstimmung mit 370 zu 134 Stimmen klar für die Notfallpläne der EU-Kommission ausgesprochen. Damit ist der Weg frei für die EU-Innenminister, an ihrem nächsten Krisentreffen vom Dienstag in Brüssel Nägel mit Köpfen zu machen.

Hundreds of Syrians and other migrants thronged a small park in central Istanbul, hoping for a last chance to reach Europe before poor weather makes their favored route from Turkey to Greece too dangerous to undertake.

“It is time to go, while the door to Europe is open,” said Zopir, 20, who fled the Syrian town of Deir al-Zor three years ago and now wants to reach Europe before his wife, eight months pregnant, gives birth. “I am afraid, but I am ready.”

Zopir scraped together 8,000 euros ($9,000) for their trip, which begins in and near the park in Aksaray, a working-class district of Istanbul, by hiring a “dealer”: a front man for smugglers who help refugees reach the Aegean coast.
