Yesterday (friday) we learned that there are reports about the shipwrecks of Sunday („400“) by the crew of the container ship „Santa Giorgina“ (flag: Liberia, captain Pawel Banys) of the ship company Claus Peter Offen (Hermann J. Klein) at Hamburg. The crew is apparently shocked and over-exertet, for the many rescue operations of the container ship. They demand, with their ship company, more state rescue operations in the mediterranean, and yesterday the german sea crew confederation wrote a letter to the german cancellor office with this demand.

First of all we have to clarify if last Sunday there have been
a. – 1 shipwreck of 1 boat with ca 550 people (ca 150 rescued, 400 dead), or
b. – 2 shipwrecks of 4 boats they travelled together, with in summary ca 550 people (ca 150 rescued, 400 dead), (ffm-online), or
c. – 3 or more shipwrecks, combination of these mentioned shipwrecks, in different zones, with 600 or more deads.

Summary of the Case: On Thursday, the 09th of April 2015, the Alarm Phone shift team received a message from Father Mussie Zerai, alerting us to the case of more than a hundred displaced persons from Eritrea, Ethiopia and Syria who had left Egypt on a vessel on the 3rd of April. Following the message, they had stranded on a Greek island and were without food and water. After sending off a distress call in the early hours of the day no one had heard of them since. Überlebende aus Mali, die das italienische Schiff „Orione“ am Dienstag nach Reggio Calabria gebracht hat, sprechen von 2 gleichzeitig untergegangenen Flüchtlingsbooten. Ob die „Orione“ die 9 Überlebenden aus dem Wasser gerettet oder später übernommen hat, wird aus dem Artikel nicht klar.

Die beiden Flüchtlingsboote, die gesunken sind, sind im Verbund mit zwei weiteren Flüchtingsbooten von der libyschen Küste am Tag zuvor gestartet. Die Flüchtinge dieser zwei weiteren Boote wurden von zwei Frachtern an Bord genommen. Insgesamt ist in den Medien meist von 150 Geretteten – von diesen 4 Booten – die Rede. Die genauen Umstände der doppelten Schiffskatastrophe (Uhrzeit des Alarms, Rettungsrekonstruktion) sind noch nicht bekannt. Namenslisten von Ertrunkenen von dieser und von früheren Schiffskatastrophen stellen bislang weder die italienischen Behörden noch internationale Organisationen auf.

The past four days saw the largest rescue operations in the Central Mediterranean Sea this year, carried out by Italian and Maltese authorities as well as several merchant vessels. Thousands had left the shores of Libya in often unseaworthy vessels, seeking to reach European territories. From Friday until Monday, the Alarm Phone has been in direct contact with many people in distress, whose lives were in severe danger. Throughout Sunday the 12th of April, the Alarm Phone shift team obtained the satellite numbers of several vessels in distress in Libyan waters or was contacted directly by people in distress. Vessel 1 had about 500 people on board, vessel 2 again about 500 people, vessel 3 about 350 people, vessel 4-5 carrying together up to 900 people, vessel 6 with a yet unknown number of people, vessel 7 with approximately 90 people, vessel 8 had an unknown number of people on board. There were, it seems, (pregnant) women and children on most of the vessels.

Die größte Rettungsaktion zu Zeiten der Festung Europa findet derzeit vor der Küste Libyens statt. Das gesamte Wochenende und auch in der Nacht zu Montag werden fortlaufend immer mehr Rettungsschiffe, Kriegsschiffe, Frachtschiffe und Hubschrauber unter Koordination der italienischen SOS-Zentrale zur Rettung von wahrscheinlich mehr als einem Dutzend Flüchtlingsbooten eingesetzt. Über Satellitentelefone und Internet-Tracking lässt sich die riesige Rettungsaktion seit drei Tagen verfolgen. Das Alarm Phone von WatchTheMed und viele andere Kontaktgruppen und -personen sind durch Bootsflüchtlinge und Angehörige eingeschaltet, ein ausführlicher Bericht folgt.

Noch nie hat es in den Massenmedien einen solchen Informations-Blackout zu Rettungsaktionen gegeben.

Migranti, soccorsi 4 gommoni. Erano in difficoltà a largo di Tripoli

– Quattro gommoni in difficoltà, con centinaia di migranti a bordo, sono stati intercettati a 50 miglia da Tripoli da una guardacoste della Guardia di finanza, impegnata nell’operazione Triton nel mar Mediterraneo. 1.000 Boat-people sind heute, Sonntagmorgen, um kurz nach 4 Uhr von Tripolis aus auf zwei Booten gestartet. Inzwischen befindet sich ein Boot – 500 Bootsflüchtlinge – in Gefahr und ruft telefonisch SOS. An Bord sind viele Kinder und Frauen, auch Schwangere.
