The Turkish government is going to set up new comprehensive border security unit encompassing territorial security, coast guard and customs security, the Turkish interior minister has said.

Efkan Ala announced the creation of a new comprehensive border security unit called „professional armed border security unit,“ which will be run by civil authorities instead of the army.

He stressed that the purpose of the new unit was to ensure Turkey’s land, airspace and coastal border security by civil authorities.

A Turkish admiral has shown footage of a migrant boat being sunk on the Aegean Sea by a Greek Coast Guard boat to a Greek Coast Guard commander, urging them to refrain from such acts, daily Hürriyet reported on Nov. 19.

Wien – Am Dienstag ist erneut ein Flüchtlingsboot vor der griechischen Insel Lesbos gekentert. Fünf Menschen starben, 40 konnten von der Küstenwache gerettet werden. Die raue See stellt die Retter vor neue Herausforderungen. Die Zusammenarbeit mit der EU-Grenzschutzbehörde Frontex verlaufe nicht ideal, sagt Ioannis Papageorgopoulos, Generaldirektor für Sicherheit und Strafverfolgung bei der griechischen Küstenwache und dort für die Rettungseinsätze zuständig.

According to a group of Turkish fishermen, the Greek Coast Guard allegedly tried to sink a boat carrying Syrian immigrants on Thursday, Hürriyet daily reported.

The boat, trying to cross into Greek waters, started its journey from the coast of Karaburun in Turkey’s İzmir province.

BERLIN taz | Die griechische Küstenwache soll in den letzten zwei Wochen mindestens vier mal mit Gewalt gegen Flüchtlingsboote vorgegangen sein. Das berichten Insassen der Boote gegenüber der Initiative Watch the Med. Diese betreibt ein Notfalltelefon im Mittelmeerraum, an das sich Flüchtlinge in Seenot wenden können.

Zuletzt gingen vier Meldungen aus der Ägäis ein. Flüchtlinge berichteten, dass teils maskierte Spezialeinheiten der Küstenwache zwischen dem türkischen Festland und den griechischen Inseln an Bord gekommen seien. Die Boote seien zu der Zeit nicht in Seenot gewesen.

Evidence shows attacks on migrant boats in the Aegean Sea where engines were removed and boats punctured by coastguards

In the past two weeks, the Alarm Phone was alerted by refugees to four different distress situations in the Aegean Sea. They had encountered masked special units of coastguards who attacked them in the middle of the sea, between Turkey and the Greek islands. Their boats had not been in distress before, they might have been able to reach a place of safety on their own! After the attacks, they were left alone on drifting and/or sinking boats for hours until the Turkish coastguard came to their rescue.

Sieben überfüllte Boote im Mittelmeer: Die italienische Küstenwache hat 1800 Flüchtlinge gerettet. Auf einem Schiff entdeckten die Sicherheitskräfte auch mehrere Leichen.

Die italienische Küstenwache hat nach eigenen Angaben am Samstag 1800 Flüchtlinge gerettet, die auf sieben überfüllten Booten über das Mittelmeer nach Europa gelangen wollten. Auf einem Boot seien fünf Leichen gefunden worden, teilte die Küstenwache mit.

Tre gommoni sono stati recuperati da Nave Corsi CP 906 della Guardia Costiera mentre le motovedette CP 302 e CP 322 di Lampedusa hanno salvato i migranti a bordo di un barcone

Sono complessivamente 969 i migranti salvati oggi in 6 diverse operazioni di soccorso coordinate dalla Centrale Operativa della Guardia Costiera a Roma del Ministero delle Infrastrutture e dei Trasporti. I migranti si trovavano a bordo di 5 gommoni e 1 barcone. Tre gommoni sono stati recuperati da Nave Corsi CP 906 della Guardia Costiera mentre le motovedette CP 302 e CP 322 di Lampedusa, insieme ad una nave inglese inserita nel dispositivo Triton, hanno salvato i migranti a bordo di un barcone. I migranti a bordo dei rimanenti due gommoni sono stati recuperati da una unità mercantile dirottata dalla Centrale Operativa della Guardia Costiera.

Authorities arrested 31.318 foreign nationals, 26 human traffickers and seized 129 vessels in June alone

The Coast Guard carried out 17 search and rescue operations in the past 24 hours, in the maritime areas around Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Leros and Kos, rescuing a total of 738 migrants who attempted to enter Greece.

According to the statistics presented by the Coast Guard, in June alone there were 517 documented attempts by migrants to illegally enter Greece, with the authorities arresting 31.318 foreign nationals. A total of 26 suspected human traffickers were also arrested and 129 vessels were seized.
