Nicht alle Flüchtlinge, die in Calais ankommen, wollen direkt nach England. Viele von ihnen bleiben im sogenannten Dschungel von Calais zumindest für ein paar Monate. Flüchtlingsunterkünfte wie in Deutschland gibt es hier nicht.

Ein junger Flüchtling, der zuvor monatelang in Freiburg und Umgebung gelebt hat, verletzte sich lebensgefährlich beim Versuch mit dem Eurostar, der zwischen Paris und London verkehrt, als blinder Passagier nach London zu kommen. Seine Flucht wirft viele Fragen, u.a. die der Aufnahme, der fragwürdigen Altersschätzung, dem Abdrängen in die Obdachlosigkeit und dem Umgang mit traumatisierten Menschen.
Er wirkte wie ein Getriebener. Fahd Shahin verließ minderjährig Ägypten. Nach nur drei Jahren Schule hatte er dort schon jahrelang gearbeitet. Den Vater hatte er früh verloren. Vor allem wollte er Arbeit finden und seiner Mutter Geld schicken. Fahds Weg führte über Libyen, das Mittelmeer nach Italien. Er berichtete nur wenig von der Überfahrt. Von einem großen Schiff und vielen Problemen, tagelang unterwegs, kaum etwas zu essen und trinken. Was genau auf dem Mittelmeer stattfand, weiß nur er selbst. Irgendwann wurden er und seine Mitreisenden von einem Schiff aufgenommen und auf die Insel Lampedusa oder direkt zum italienisches Festland gebracht. Erlebnisse, die man nicht vergisst.

Médecins du Monde, which has semi-permanent base in migrant camp, says number of people needing urgent help has rocketed in recent days
Medical staff in Calais say they are struggling to cope with the number of seriously injured migrants, who are taking ever greater risks attempting to get to the UK.
As French police confirmed the death of another migrant attempting to cross the Channel, Médecins du Monde, which has a semi-permanent base in “the jungle” migrant camp in Calais, said that the number of people needing urgent help had rocketed in recent days.

In Europa wird viel von Menschenwürde gesprochen und Asyl nur unter Lebensgefahr gewährt. Für diese Politik ist Calais das traurige Symbol.
Großbritannien und Frankreich investieren ein paar zusätzliche Millionen in die verstärkte Sicherung der Zugänge zum Eurotunnel unter dem Ärmelkanal. Auf beiden Seiten weiß man, dass auch das die Migranten keineswegs vom Versuch einer illegalen Überquerung abhalten wird. Und wie seit Jahren werden es einige früher oder später auch nach Großbritannien schaffen.
Nur: Das Risiko steigt fast proportional zur Höhe der Zäune und Mauern, die die Anlegestellen für die Fähren sowie die Tunneleinfahrt umgeben.

For once the Daily Mail has got it right with its demand to “End this Migrant Madness” but not in the way they mean it.
It is time to end this tabloid media pretence that nightly, repeated and mostly unsuccessful, attempts by a few hundred migrants to illegally enter Britain by way of the Channel tunnel amount to an invasion threat not seen since Hitler assembled his invasion barges in the autumn of 1940.
The “invasion thesis” is fuelled by the use of language that reduces the status of those who have fled from Syria, Eritrea and other failing states in the biggest movement of displaced people since the second world war to the single word of “illegals”.

Flüchtlinge versuchen immer wieder, über den Eurotunnel bei der nordfranzösischen Stadt Calais nach Großbritannien zu gelangen. Dabei ist auf der französischen Seite erneut ein Mensch ums Leben gekommen. Das teilte der Betreiber Eurotunnel mit. Der Flüchtling im Alter zwischen 25 und 30 Jahren stamme aus dem Sudan, schreibt die Nachrichtenagentur AFP. Er sei tödlich verunglückt, als er versuchte, auf einen Zug zu gelangen. Es war der neunte derartige Todesfall am Eurotunnel seit Anfang Juni.

Fresh disruption was brought to Channel tunnel services after about 150 migrants tried to storm the terminal in Calais in a bid to board UK-bound freight.
Eurotunnel said services were delayed and cancelled after migrants attempted to access restricted areas on the French side.

New jungle camp, which has no shelter for men and no running water, represents an alarming toughening in France’s treatment of UK-bound migrants
Karim, an Egyptian politics graduate with an admiration for Winston Churchill and “all things British”, had spent days trying to fix up a tent in thorny and windswept scrubland on the site of old rubbish dump in Calais, using bits of plastic sheeting, flimsy branches, a few stones and a wooden pallet.
“This has got to be the worst place I’ve ever seen – it’s not fit for animals,” he said. After rain poured into his tent at night, at 2am he got up and walked, soaking, the four miles (7km) back to his old squat in the centre of Calais, pelted with potatoes from a car whose passenger slowed down and shouted racist abuse.
