Hungary: refugees and asylum seekers boom in 2013
From 2,157 asylum seekers in 2012 to 18,900 in 2013
ANSA – BUDAPEST – Hungary recorded in 2013 a number of requests for political asylum nine times higher than in 2012, growing from 2,157 to 18,900, and this has been an “unprecedented “ increase since 2000, according to Zsuzsanna Vegh, director general of the Hungarian Immigration and Citizenship Deparment, a press release issued by the Interior Ministry reported. Vegh pointed out that in 2013, 23,000 people have crossed the southern Hungarian border illegally, 85% of which sought refugee protection, even though in a “significant number “ of cases the request was not justified. According to the press release, most of the illegal migrants in 2013 (more than 6,000 people) came from Kosovo, that is 32% of asylum applications. The remaining 68% came from Afghanistan, Algeria and Syria. According to Vegh, this increase in the number of refugees seeking asylum in Hungary depends in particular on the reduction of “security“ in their home countries, in particular Syria and Afghanistan. As for Kosovo, however, financial and existential problems “have forced many people to leave their countries“ to seek a job and to build a new life in Hungary. (ANSA)

Essay zur Zuwanderung aus Osteuropa
Von „Einwanderung in die Sozialsysteme“ kann keine Rede sein. Die Überlebensstrategien orientieren sich schlicht am realen Dauerelend.

Ja, wir wollen Zuwanderung. Nein, wir haben nichts gegen Ausländer und auch nichts gegen Roma, die schließlich Opfer eines Völkermords waren und mancherorts bis heute verfolgt werden. Wir brauchen Fachkräfte, und deren Herkunft ist uns egal. Was wir dagegen nicht wollen, ist eine Einwanderung in unsere Sozialsysteme.
Es ist ein breiter Konsens, der sich nach einer Reihe von Provokationen aus der CSU herausgebildet hat. Bloß: „Einwanderung in die Sozialsysteme“ ist schon an sich ein tendenziöses Schema, das die wirklichen Verhältnisse schlecht beschreibt.
Angesichts der geplanten EU-Visafreiheit für BürgerInnen von 5 osteuropäischen Staaten regt sich Unmut in den nordafrikanischen Ländern: Genau dieselben formellen Voraussetzungen wurden auch von den nordafrikanischen Staaten erfüllt, aber eine EU-Visafreiheit Richtung Süden ist nicht in Sicht.

This Monday, ahead of the European Parliament’s vote on Wednesday that formally adopted the recast Reception Conditions Directive, the Hungarian government amended its asylum legislation which will introduce the detention of asylum seekers for up to six months. Both UNHCR and ECRE’s Member, the Hungarian Helsinki Committee (HHC) have warned that the grounds for detaining persons seeking international protectionare too broad, and as a result, there is a significant risk of the widespread detention of asylum seekers. Marta Pardavi, Co-Chair at HHC has critised the aim of the legislation:

Un camp pour immigrants à proximité de la frontière avec la SerbieDepuis plusieurs années, Subotica est le lieu de passage et d’hébergement de milliers de migrants, principalement originaire des pays d’extrême-orient, des personnes qui pour des motifs économiques ou bien en raison de l’instabilité politique de leurs pays, cherchent une « vie meilleure » dans la partie plus riche et régulée de la planète, l’Union européenne. Dès lors que les frontières de l’UE pour l’entrée régulière de ces personnes sont plus fortes que les murs des remparts médiévaux, leur tentative de passer par la frontière serbo-hongroise vers leurs destinations finales – le plus souvent l’Allemagne, la France, la Grande-Bretagne – les conduit à tenter un passage illégal de la frontière, et la plupart aboutissent en prison et devant un juge.

Statement of the refugees who left Hungary
We, the refugees previously living in the Bicske Reception Centre (Hungary) decided to leave Hungary and apply for asylum in Germany. We decided to leave Hungary because all our attempts (listed below) to seek help to live a normal life as refugees in Hungary have failed.
