This week the mayor of Mitilini, Mr. Galinos announced to close down Pikpa, the self-organised Welcome Center for refugees on Lesvos by the end of September. Since 2012, Pikpa is run by volunteers from the localinitiative “Village of all together”.

Berichte von seriösen Zeitung und Nachrichtenagenturen aus Italien und Malta an diesem Wochenende lassen darauf schließen, dass es wahrscheinlich drei Schiffskatastrophen im Zentralen Mittelmeer seit Freitagabend gegeben hat. Die letzte Schiffskatastrophe hat sich vor Alexandria (Ägypten) ereignet, dort ist eine bislang unbekannte Zahl von PalästinenserInnen aus Gaza ertrunken.
Die beiden anderen Schiffskatastrophen sind „südöstlich von Malta“ passiert. Die Presse- und Nachrichtenagentur-Berichte, die die Aussagen von Überlebenden über 400 Ertrunkene eines Bootes einschließen, sind unvorstellbar ungenau und widersprüchlich. Es fehlen durchgängig genaue Zeit- und Ortsangaben.
Obwohl oder weil hochgerüstete Marine-Einheiten aus Italien, Malta und Griechenland an den Rettungsaktionen der Schiffskatastrophe beteiligt sind, wurde der genaue Ort des Unglücks immer noch nicht bekannt gegeben. Es ist unklar, wie nah oder fern von Kreta das Flüchtlingsboot sank.
Ein Teil der wenigen Überlebenden wurde nach Kreta, ein anderer Teil nach Malta gebracht, Einzelne vielleicht auch nach Italien. Die ersten Stimmen von Überlebenden, dass über 400 Mitreisende ertrunken sind, sind derzeit nicht überprüfbar. Inzwischen ist in der Presse „nur“ noch von 2 geborgenen Toten und 20 Vermissten die Rede. In den Artikeln heisst es, dass sich die Militärs auf die Versorgung der Überlebenden kümmern und die Suche nach Vermissten / Ertrunkenen nur an 2. Stelle steht. Ausserdem wurde bekannt, dass das Flüchtlingsboot von einem Schiff gerammt worden ist und deswegen sank.
Über den Weg von abgegebenen SOS-Anrufen dieses Flüchtlingsschiffs wird ebenfalls Stillschweigen gewahrt.

Unaccompanied minor severely self-injured himself in Moria “first reception” detention centre in Lesvos
On 17/7/2014 a 17-year-old Afghan who had been detained for many days in Moria awaiting his transfer to a special reception centre for minors cut his arms in an act of despair and protest as he could not stand anymore being closed up for many days and under such conditions. He was transferred to the psychiatry department of the local hospital.

On the early noon of Sunday 11th of July a refugee boat got in distress 10nm North East of Karlovasi, Samos. The refugee boat carrying approximately 35-40 people was a sailing boat according to the testimonies of the survivors. The causes of the shipwreck are not yet clear. Weiterlesen »

Migration In Greece
Are there too many immigrants living in Greece so that there is no more room for others? Are they „illegal immigrants“? Is the law on citizenship an „illegal immigrants“ magnet? Are foreigners, although we treat them in the best possible way, time bombs that threaten public health? Do they take our jobs and threaten our lives and properties? Albanians have integrated; are Pakistanis a different story? Is racist violence limited to a few isolated incidents? Did our own fathers emigrate legally?
We have repeatedly heard this and much more in the form of statements and not questions. But as deeply as they might be embedded in the public opinion, the above stereotypes prove to be tenuous: a level-headed review shows that not only they are dangerous (as they are often associated with extreme right-wing schools of thought), but they also do not correspond with the truth.
For at least twenty years, the migration issue in Greece is an issue which has been permanently coming to the forefront in different guises, taking up a central spot in public discussions. Those discussions are mostly dominated by distorted notions, while true facts are obscured, as migration is an issue that is instrumentalised by politics and exploited by the media. The actions of the main representatives of mass media and systematic interventions by the extreme right have led to the creation of social myths and at times even of situations of “moral panic”, which makes it more and more difficult to comprehend the phenomenon’s complexity and of course address it in a sober manner.

End death at border now! Respect human life and death!
We, the inhabitants of both sides of Aegean Sea, express our anger and our shock about the thousands of deaths of refugees and migrants in their effort to cross Europe. They are a direct result of the Europe Fortress policy: The sealing of the borders and the lack of any other way for these people to seek protection.
