Asylum seekers on hunger strike in Finland – No to deportations to Afghanistan!

Two Afghan asylum seekers have been on hunger strike in Helsinki from the
10th of September. For the first two weeks there were three hunger strikers. By going on hunger strike they are opposing their deportation to Afghanistan, for they have reason to believe that their lives are in danger there.
The Finnish Immigration Service has refused to grant asylum to them. The hunger striking men have appealed to the Administrative Court of Helsinki about the negative response to their asylum claims but fear that the appeal will be rejected.
The hunger striking men are prosecuted in Afghanistan because of political activity. One of them has been tortured. Their close relatives have been murdered recently. The background of their individual prosecution in Afghanistan is the war that has been going on in the country for years and the dysfunction of the current government. Ordinary people have no way of getting protection neither against prosecution carried out by the Taliban nor against that carried out by state officials.

Das Recht auf Asyl duldet keine Unterschiede!

Oktober 2012 – In den vergangenen Tagen haben konservative Politiker, aber auch Mitglieder der SPD, wiederholt gefordert, die Visumpflicht für serbische und mazedonische StaatsbürgerInnen, die im Dezember 2009 gelockert wurde, wieder einzuführen. Sie möchten damit den „massiven Zustrom von serbischen und mazedonischen Staatsbürgern“ stoppen. Dabei geht es in erster Linie um Mitglieder der Romaminderheit, die seit Aufhebung der Visumpflicht für Kurzaufenthalte im Schengenraum vermehrt in der EU und anderen Schengener Vertragsstaaten Asyl beantragen.

Spätestens mit Tausenden Toten auf dem Mittelmeer ist klar, wie die Europäische Union zur Abwehr unerwünschter Migration bis zum Äußersten geht: Ihre Grenzschutzagentur FRONTEX will Flüchtlinge schon weit außerhalb der EU-Mitgliedstaaten abfangen.

Jetzt wird das Mittelmeer weiter militarisiert: Im Grenzüberwachungssystem EUROSUR gehen EU-Mitgliedstaaten mit Drohnen, Radaranlagen und Satelliten auf die Jagd nach auffälligen Booten. Als Zentrale fungiert das FRONTEX-Hauptquartier in Warschau. Auch Tunesien, Marokko und Libyen sollen in EUROSUR integriert werden.

Danach sollen auch die Landgrenzen der EU gründlich ausgespäht werden. Hierfür müssen neue Beitrittsländer Milliarden für Wärmebildkameras, Röntgengeräte, Patrouillenboote und Helikopter ausgeben. Es profitiert die europäische Rüstungsindustrie.

Protest of Somali refugees in Austria

At the same time with the refugee movements in Germany and in the Netherlands, also in Austria more and more refugees are going on the streets to protest for their rights.

On 10th of October, almost 300 Somali refugees, together with supporters, made a protest demonstration from the national asylum office in Vienna to the AUstrian parliament. After this, some of the protesters stayed at the parliament for 2 days to make a permanent rally for ending their unbearable situation. Many of the Somali refugees in Austria are refused refugee status, so that they receive only a limitted „subsidiary protection“ or a complete rejection of their case, so that they are denied many of their rights and excluded from the society. There are also many Somali refugees who are excluded from the Austrian asylum stystem through the „Dublin II“-convention and deported to other EU-states like Hungary, Slovakia or Italy.

The basic demands of the Somali refugees:
-Quicker asylum procedures
-Admission of asylum status of Somalian Refugees
-Right for family reunion
-Stop Dublin II deportations
– access to labour market

Protest somalischer Flüchtlinge in Österreich

Zeitgleich mit den Flüchtlingsbewegungen in Deutschland und den Niederlanden gehen auch in Österreich immer mehr Flüchtlinge für ihre Rechte auf die Straße.

Am 10. Oktober haben fast 300 somalische Flüchtlinge zusammen mit Unterstützer*innen einen Demozug vom Bundesasylamt in Wien zum österreichischen Parlament gemacht. Einige der Protestierenden sind anschließend 2 Tage und Nächte vor dem Parlament geblieben und haben mit ihrer Dauerkundgebung die Beendigung ihrer unerträglichen Situation gefordert. Vielen somalischen Flüchtlingen in Österreich wird die Anerkennung ihres Flüchtlingsstatus verweigert, sie bekommen nur einen befristeten subsidiären Schutz oder eine komplette Ablehnung, wodurch sie vieler Rechte beraubt sind und gesellschaftlich ausgegrenzt werde. Viele werden auch nach ihrer Ankunft durch die „Dublin II“-Verordnung aus dem österreichischen Asylsystem ausgeschlossen und in andere EU-Staaten wie Ungarn, die Slowakei oder Italien abgeschoben.

Die zentralen Forderungen der somalischen Flüchtlinge:
-Schluss mit Dublin-II-Abschiebungen, Recht auf Zugang zum Asylverfahren in Österreich
-Schluss mit dem quälenden Warten – schnellere Bearbeitung der Asylanträge
-Anerkennung des Flüchtlingsstatus statt Unsicherheit, Rechtlosigkeit und Angst
-Recht auf Familienzusammenführung auch für somalische Flüchtlinge
-Zugang zum Arbeitsmarkt

41 Georgians deported by FRONTEX on 11th October

At 3pm yesterday, Thursday 11th October, a charter flight from Vienna arrived at Tbilisi airport in Georgia. On board were 41 Georgians who had been deported from the European Union.

Since the readmission agreement signed between the EU and Georgia in March 2011, FRONTEX regularly organises deportation flights to Georgia. In fact, FRONTEX deportations to Georgia predate the readmission agreement, since their very first charter flight, from Warsaw on 28 September 2010, was bound for Tbilisi, with 56 Georgians on board. The exact number of charter flights is unknown, but one has been arriving approximately once a month or every two months since spring 2011. The last FRONTEX deportation flight to Tbilisi arrived at the beginning of August.

In Jeitawi, little empathy for migrants

Three days after the Lebanese army raids against foreign migrants in Jeitawi, more and more details have come to light. Apparently the military’s operation was an act of collective punishment after mountingcomplaints by residents in the neighborhood about harassment and other disturbances.

According to a Human Rights Watch report published Wednesday, on Sunday night the Lebanese army raided three houses in the area. For several hours, they attacked at least 72 male workers from Syria, Egypt and Sudan with broomsticks and “viciously kicked and beat them.”

RCM’s (Regional Center for Minorities) press-release about the situation outside of the Centre for Asylum Seekers in Bogovađa — the centre has run over its capacity for months, until the management decided to stop accommodating the surplus of people and now around a hundred asylum seekers are staying outside, without shelter, water or food. The situation is becoming drastic, with the falling temperatures.

Worrying situation outside of the Centre for Asylum Seekers in Bogovađa

Belgrade, September 25, 2012 – The Regional Centre for Minorities strongly condemns the worrying situation outside of the Centre for Asylum Seekers in Bogovađa, which our activists visited on the 12th of September. Between eighty and a hundred asylum seekers are staying outside, as the centre has reached its maximum capacity of 150 people.

The basic human rights of the people outside of the centre are endangered – they do not have a roof over their head, access to water, basic sanitation and adequate nutrition. In other words, both their life and their right to a dignified life are endangered.

With this treatment of asylum seekers, the Serbian state is breaking its own laws, as well as international standards, which state that everyone who seeks asylum should be accommodated, and their basic needs provided for, within 72 hours, and until the final decision on their asylum claim has been reached.

The Centre for Asylum Seekers in Bogovađa is, besides the centre in Banja Koviljača, the only centre of this kind in Serbia. Asylum seekers were first accommodated there in June 2011. After racist mobilisations in Banja Koviljača in October 2011, many asylum seekers were relocated to Bogovađa and the centre soon exceeded, its capacity. Thus in July 2012, 229 were accommodated in the centre.

As the number of asylum seekers in Serbia keeps rising, the existing centres are too small to accommodate everybody. However, the Commissariat for Refugees of Republic of Serbia (KIRS), responsible for the accommodation of asylum seekers, has not been opening new centres. Besides, the Centre in Bogovađa reduced the number of people it accommodates to the official maximum capacity of 150 people. The reason for this could be that the costs of accommodating one person for one night is 8 euros, according to the words of a representative of KIRS.

The asylum system in Serbia has serious shortcomings. Since 2008, when the independent asylum system started in Serbia, nobody has been granted refugee status. This means that Serbia is effectively not a country in which migrants could permanently regularise their status, through claiming asylum. However, many undocumented migrants in Serbia seek asylum, because this is the only way for them to gain a temporary legal status and have at least temporary access to basic rights, such as a roof over their head and health-care. It is thus disgraceful to see that, even after they have claimed asylum, migrants are not accommodated in the centers and need to continue to sleep outside.

The Regional Centre for Minorities demands that the authorities find a solution for accommodating the asylum seekers, who are now staying without a shelter in front of the centre in Bogovađa as soon as possible, especially as the weather conditions are becoming more and more difficult and could gravely exacerbate an already worrying situation. We also believe that it is urgent to end the human rights violations and to ensure the compliance with the standards, which represent the minimum of the state’s obligations towards these people — and include providing them with the means necessary for their survival.
