Summary of the Case:The shift team of the Watch The Med Alarm Phone received a distress call around 13:00h from passengers on a vessel near the Greek island of Mytilene. They informed the shift team that 35 people were in distress and stuck in the same position at sea for nearly two hours. The contact person appeared scared and in panic, stating repeatedly that they had little time left and urgently needed help. They were unable, however, to pass on their exact position.

„Sie sind im sicheren Hafen von Lampedusa angekommen. Abel, Habtom, Foutui und Gebre sagen, sie stammen aus Eritrea. Zwischen 14 und 20 Jahre sind sie alt. Jeder von ihnen war monatelang unterwegs. Mitte Februar sind sie dann gemeinsam von Libyen aus mit dem Boot übergesetzt. „Das Haus in Libyen war sehr schlecht,“ erzählt Foutui. Er war eingepfercht mit weiteren 450 Personen. Es gab kaum Essen, er war ständig hungrig. Das wenige Wasser war dreckig. Waschen konnte er sich selten. Warum ist er aus Eritrea weggegangen, will ich wissen. „Es gibt keine Freiheit, keine Arbeit, keine Ausbildung. Alles ist schlecht. In Italien gibt es Freiheit. Und Arbeit.“
