Boat carrying 100 migrants capsize off Libya

TRIPOLI: A boat carrying more than 100 migrants capsized off the coast near the Libyan capital, a coast guard official said on Sunday.

Abdel-Latif Mohammed said the coast guard found the damaged rubber boat off the shores of Al Qarbouli, 50 kilometers east of Tripoli.

The coast guard has not yet confirmed the number of deaths but estimated the boat carried at least 100 people.

Meanwhile, Libyan coastguards on Sunday found 15 bodies of sub-Saharan African migrants floating in the sea near a ripped inflatable boat, east of the capital.

“During a routine patrol we found 15 floating bodies of African migrants 15 kilometres offshore,” coastguard Abdellatif Mohammed Ibrahim said.

“These bodies, including two women and two children, were floating near a ripped inflatable craft,” he said. Other bodies may have sunk in the sea at the location off Al Qarabole, 60 kilometres east of Tripoli, he said.

The grisly new discovery came as Tunisian coastguards continued on Sunday to look for bodies of migrants thought to be Syrians, after finding 42 shipwreck victims since Friday.

“Forty-two bodies have been recovered: 31 were buried on the spot and 11 others will be during the day,” said Tahar Souid, co-ordinator of the emergency centre set up at Ben Guerdane in southeast Tunisia where the first bodies were discovered on Friday. Local officials at Ben Guerdane in southeast Tunisia believe the bodies were from a sinking off the coast of Libya.

They were “probably” some of the people who went missing earlier this week when a boat capsized after leaving the Libyan port of Zwara, heading for Italy, an official said.
