EU provides assistance to people displaced by Libya conflict

Responding to the deteriorating security situation in Libya which has led to an increase in casualties and displacement, the EU is providing some €215 000 to support the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC). More than 600 people have been killed since the attacks in July and August, and at least 10 000 families have been displaced.

The security situation in Libya is highly volatile and political instability related to the transition is increasing humanitarian needs. Food supplies in Tripoli and parts of Benghazi are dwindling as a result of stocks running low, but also because of banks being closed and cash becoming a rare commodity. Concerns about water supply and the provision of electricity remain high.

The EU funding will provide food assistance to 15 000 displaced persons and vulnerable host families, essential household items to 1 000 families (including blankets, mattresses and kitchen sets), and psychosocial support to 4 000 families across the country. It will also support Libyan Red Crescent Society’s volunteers with basic safety, protection tools and insurance.
