We express our deepest concern in relation to the information, complaints and testimonies about violence and abuse by the Hellenic Police in the detention centre in Moria, Lesvos. Visual material depicting scenes of violent, inhuman and degrading treatment towards refugees causes disgust, while information about arbitrary arrests is of great concern.  In addition, the action of citizens who appear, in the same video, to be attacking and severely beating migrants and refugees, under the tolerance of police officers, raises many questions and requires instant investigation by the competent authorities. The number of refugees and migrants waiting to be granted asylum or deported came to 62,407 on Tuesday, according to data released on Wednesday by the Greek Defense Ministry’s Coordinating Body for the Management of the Refugee Crisis.

The five Aegean islands hosting facilities are currently home of 15,222 asylum seekers and migrants, the majority of which are on Lesvos: 4,725 at the official state-run facility that has a total capacity for 3,500 and 188 at other centers. Chios is hosting 3,503 individuals, when it has an official capacity for 1,100, Samos’s facilities for 850 people have to cope with 2,414 and Kos is also stretched with 1,830 people living in a camp designed for 1,000, as well another 1,048 people staying at other facilities. Only Leros has manageable numbers, with 865 refugees and migrants staying at a camp for 1,000 people, as well as an additional 160 individuals in other facilities.

Überfüllte Sammellager, Gewalt, Bürokratie, keine Perspektive – nichts ist gut für Flüchtlinge in Griechenland. Die Krise war nie weg. Das Chaos ist gewollt: Es soll abschrecken.

Irgendwann wird er auch im Boot sitzen, zurück in die Türkei. Die Statistik der Asylbehörde Griechenlands verheißt nichts Gutes für ihn. Nur 3,4 Prozent der Bangladescher kommen durch. Sohel Miah müsste schon ziemlich viel Glück haben, er kann nur hoffen, dass seine Geschichte bei den Asylrichtern in Athen verfängt. „Ich finde, es ist nicht fair“, sagt der 37-jährige Ingenieur.

Miah ist der Sprecher der Flüchtlinge aus Bangladesch im Lager Moria auf der griechischen Insel Lesbos, wo 250 seiner Landsleute leben. Seit einem Jahr sitzt er auf der größten der Flüchtlingsinseln in der Ägäis fest. Zu Hause in Bangladesch hat er Probleme bekommen, so erzählt er. Miahs Vater ist ein Provinzpolitiker mit vielen Feinden; auch der Sohn wird bedroht. Miahs Asylantrag ist im Containerbüro auf Lesbos in erster Instanz abgelehnt worden. Seine Akte liegt jetzt in einem der Berufungskomitees in Athen. Dort wird sie auch noch bleiben.

Flawed Procedures Leave Those on Lesbos at Risk of Abuse

(Athens) – Unaccompanied migrant children on the Greek island of Lesbos are being incorrectly identified as adults and housed with unrelated adults, leaving them vulnerable to abuse and unable to access the specific care they need, Human Rights Watch said today.

“The misidentification of unaccompanied migrant kids on Lesbos as adults leads to real problems, including lumping them together with unrelated adults and denying them the care they need,” said Eva Cossé, Greece researcher at Human Rights Watch. “Greek authorities need to take responsibility for properly identifying unaccompanied children and providing them the protection and care every child needs.”

On visits to Lesbos island from May 22 to 28 and June 27 to 30, 2017, Human Rights Watch spoke with 20 children, some as young as 15, who said they had been wrongly registered as adults by the Greek authorities.

Mehr als zwei Jahre nach dem offenen Ausbruch der Flüchtlingskrise hat sich europaweit die frühere Willkommenskultur ins Gegenteil verwandelt

In Griechenland werden Flüchtlinge und Immigranten immer noch dem gleichen Procedere unterzogen. Gemäß dem Flüchtlingsdeal der EU mit der Türkei müssen sämtliche Neuankömmlinge auf den griechischen Inseln bleiben, auf denen sie angekommen sind. Erst nach abgeschlossener Überprüfung des Asylantrags ist eine Weiterreise auf das griechische Festland oder aber, nach Abschluss eines möglichen Widerspruchs gegen eine Ablehnung, eine Ausweisung in die Türkei möglich.

Die gesamte Zeit über müssen die Flüchtlinge und Immigranten in den in vieler Hinsicht unzureichenden Lagern verbleiben. Dies wiederum strapaziert die wirtschaftlichen Interessen der mit dem Tourismus befassten Insulaner, welche ihrerseits in der Furcht über ihre eigene Existenz zu xenophoben Überreaktionen neigen.

Sprachunterricht in Thessaloniki bei der Flüchtlingshilfe von „Naomi“: Fatima aus Syrien sitzt mit leuchtenden Augen im kleinen engen Klassenzimmer und bekommt Lob von ihren beiden Lehrerinnen. Denn sie hat schon viel gelernt. „Ich heiße Fatima Achmad, ich komme aus Syrien. Ich wohne in Thessaloniki. Ich denke, ich möchte nach Deutschland gehen. Ich möchte meinen Sohn sehen. Und maybe das ist not richtig. Aber ich versuche“, sagt sie.
