An Eritrean migrant died and his wife was injured in an accident involving a British car driver on a motorway near the French port of Calais.

The pair were knocked down on an interchange where dozens of migrants were reportedly trying to climb on to lorries.

Some of the migrants then set upon the British driver, officials say.

France has said it will soon close down a camp at Calais where up to 10,000 migrants are staying.

The migrants and refugees are hoping to cross the English Channel and include at least 900 unaccompanied minors.

Last month a teenaged Afghan boy was killed while trying to climb on to a lorry heading to the port on its way to the Channel Tunnel.

Polizei setzt Tränengas ein

Vor dem als „Dschungel von Calais“ bekannten Flüchtlingslager haben Migranten und Hunderte Aktivisten protestiert. Steine flogen, die französische Polizei setzte Tränengas ein. Präsident Hollande will das Lager bis Jahresende schließen.

Bei einer ungenehmigten Demonstration vor dem als „Dschungel“ bekannten Flüchtlingslager in Calais hat es Zusammenstöße gegeben. Die französische Polizei ging mit Tränengas und Wasserwerfern gegen etwa 50 Demonstranten und 200 Flüchtlinge vor, die ihrerseits mit Steinen warfen. Die Protestteilnehmer erklärten, sie zeigten Solidarität mit den Migranten.

Die Sicherheitskräfte hatten etwa 150 weitere Demonstranten an einer Straßensperre fast 50 Kilometer vor dem Lager an der Weiterreise gehindert. Für den Protest kamen Hunderte Menschen per Bus aus anderen Städten. In dem Camp leben bis zu 10.000 Migranten unter schwierigen Bedingungen.

Lager bis Jahresende schließen

Der französische Präsident François Hollande hatte angekündigt, das Lager in Calais bis Jahresende zu schließen und Tausende Migranten innerhalb Frankreichs umzusiedeln, während ihre Asylanträge bearbeitet werden. Immer wieder versuchen Migranten in Calais, auf Lastwagen in Richtung Großbritannien zu gelangen. Anwohner und Lkw-Fahrer hatten sich zunehmend verzweifelt und wütend über die Situation vor Ort gezeigt.

Der französische Staatspräsident François Hollande hat den Willen seiner Regierung zur Schließung des Flüchtlingslagers von Calais bekräftigt. Das Camp werde „vollständig und endgültig aufgelöst“, sagte Hollande am Montag bei einem Besuch in der nordfranzösischen Hafenstadt. In dem Lager halten sich nach offiziellen Angaben rund 7000 Menschen auf. Nach Zählungen von Hilfsorganisationen sind es sogar mehr als 10.000.

Work has begun on a £1.9m wall to block migrants and asylum seekers from attempting to board lorries heading to the Calais port.

The structure will stand 4 metres tall and 1km long on both sides of the dual carriageway approaching the port, a few hundred metres from the main refugee camp, where more than 10,000 people live in conditions that charities describe as dangerous and dirty. It will be made of smooth concrete, making it harder to climb, and extends an existing wire fence that flanks the immediate approach to the port.

14-year-old said to have had legal right to travel to Britain, but despair at application delays led him to try stowaway route

A “polite and gentle” 14-year-old boy from Afghanistan has been killed in a hit-and-run incident on the motorway leading to Calais port, highlighting the extreme risks that asylum-seeking children take every night as they attempt to join relatives in the UK.

The boy was trying to climb on to the roof of a lorry that had slowed as it approached the port in the early hours of Friday morning, according to eye-witnesses. They said another child was attempting to pull the boy on to the moving vehicle, but he lost his grip and fell onto the road, where a car hit him. The driver did not stop.

Damaskus/New York. Flüchtlingskonferenzen haben in der kommenden Woche Hochkonjunktur: Zuerst wird im Rahmen der UNO-Vollversammlung mehrfach zum Thema getagt. Am Samstag folgt dann ein „Mini-Gipfel“ der „Länder an der Balkanroute“ samt Deutschland in Wien.

Am Montag steigt bei der UN-Vollversammlung der „Summit for Refugees and Migrants“ in New York. Außenminister Sebastian Kurz trommelt dabei am Rande die Westbalkan-Außenminister zusammen. Am Dienstag nimmt Bundeskanzler Christian Kern bei der Generaldebatte auch am „Leader’s Summit on the Global Refugee Crisis“ unter Leitung von US-Präsident Barack Obama teil. Am Samstag treffen einander auf Einladung von Bundeskanzler Christian Kern die Regierungschefs der „Länder an der Balkanroute“, inklusive Deutschland und Griechenland, in Wien.

The situation is deteriorating in “the Jungle” — the informal settlement in the northern French port of Calais of refugees trying to reach Britain.

French police demolished the southern half earlier this year, yet the population is steadily rising and has surpassed 10,000. Neglected by governments and NGOs, the volunteers who provide food, clothing and other aid are receiving fewer donations to assist the growing population. Hunger has become prevalent, along with diseases caused by lack of sanitation.

Increased security to thwart the refugees’ attempts to cross the Channel and reach Britain has meant that refugees are remaining in the Jungle longer. This has fuelled a rise in mental health issues and violence between desperate refugees.

The growth of the Jungle, like the growth of equally squalid refugee camps and settlements in Greece — collectively housing about 60,000 people — is not because the number of refugees in Europe (about 0.5% of the population) is too high for them to be properly accommodated. Rather, it is the result of racist policies by national governments creating bottlenecks.

CALAIS – „Fin qui tutto bene“. Julien guarda il contachilometri, ne mancano meno di due al traguardo. Rallenta, controlla lo specchietto retrovisore. „Spesso i migranti passano da dietro“. Sul rettilineo, il traffico scorre. Potrebbe sembrare un’autostrada come le altre, se non fosse per le recinzioni con filo spinato intorno. All’improvviso, Julien vede davanti a sé una colonna immobile di tir. Un gruppo di profughi ha bruciato due bidoni piazzati in mezzo alla carreggiata. Sono le 11 di mattina. „Prima invadevano l’autostrada solo di notte, ora non temono più nulla“ commenta l’autista, 29 anni, dipendente dell’impresa di trasporto internazionale Deroo. Julien Wysoscki fa il camionista dal 2006, ma sta pensando di smettere. „Ogni volta che mi siedo al volante, ho paura“ confessa mentre si sentono i botti dei lacrimogeni. La polizia disperde i migranti dalla strada, si vedono correre nei campi, verso la Giungla, la gigantesca baraccopoli a poche centinaia di metri. Da qualche settimana tra i profughi si è sparsa la voce dell’imminente evacuazione ordinata dal governo, e molti fanno gesti sempre più disperati.
