140 Menschen verhindern in Erfurt erneut Abschiebung

Fingerprinting by force: secret discussions on „systematic identification“ of migrants and asylum seekers

The European Commission and Member States are discussing, in secret, a set of „best practices for Member States to follow in order to ensure that their obligations under the Eurodac Regulation are fulfilled“.

The guidelines ultimately address „fingerprinting [with] the use of a proportionate degree of coercion“ including on „vulnerable persons, such as minors or pregnant women“. The aim is to „uphold the integrity of the Dublin Regulation“ – the legal basis for Europe’s asylum system, which many consider to be fundamentally flawed.

Greek minister slams EU over migration, suggests opening borders

Alternate Citizens Protection Minister Yiannis Panousis is seen during a recent visit to the migrant detention center in Amygdaleza, northwest of Athens.

Alternate Citizens Protection Minister Yiannis Panousis complained on Wednesday that the European Union’s immigration policy has imposed a disproportionately heavy burden on Greece, indicating that Greece’s European peers might feel differently if the country opened its borders and allowed hundreds of thousands of migrants to continue their journeys to other EU member states.

He claimed that money from the EU to accommodate undocumented migrants is not a solution, as the country must deal with the “social and other repercussions of wars and civil strife,” referring to the conflict-ridden countries from which most migrants come. “We should share that influx,” Panousis said.

“I would open the borders and let 500,000 people into other countries, and then we’ll see how sensitive Europe is about [the problem],” he said.

Panousis’s comments, made to Vima FM radio, drew a sharp response from New Democracy’s press spokesman Costas Karagounis, who described them as “a bad joke.”

The comments came a day after Panousis announced that migrants will not be held for more than 18 months in Greek detention centers which are to gradually close down.

New UNHCR report warns against returning asylum-seekers to Greece

This is a summary of what was said by UNHCR spokesperson William Spindler – to whom quoted text may be attributed – at the press briefing, on 30 January 2015, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

UNHCR is today releasing a report on the current situation of asylum in Greece. The report commends Greece for reforms it has undertaken during a period of economic difficulties and limited resources. But it also points to multiple gaps and concerns and carries a recommendation that asylum-seekers should still not be returned there.

Refugees say they’re at breaking point

By Evie Andreou

CLOSE to breaking point, and devastated by the recent death of one of their own, some 60 Syrian refugees from the 337 rescued off the coast in September en route to Italy are tired of waiting, they said during a protest they held yesterday outside the House.

The death of the 25-year-old man – he was found hanged in a park near the presidential palace on Friday – motivated the refugees from the Kokkinotrimithia camp to take to the streets, they said.

Diritti e Frontiere

Athens 5 December 2014

It continues to the bitter end, in front of Greek Parliament the garrison and the hunger strike of three hundred Syrians, mostly families with small children , who claim the right to be welcomed in dignity and demand the possibility to leave Greece and reach another European country .

This is a protest that highlights all the negative effects of the Dublin Regulation III, nailing in the first country of entry all the potential asylum seekers ,at the point that many of them prefer to be rejected at the border, or to continue the journey placing themselves in the hands of “land-smugglers „, fueling the business of illegal immigration , rather than be forced to release the fingerprints in a country like Greece , which cannot be defined „safe “ for asylum seekers for the systematic shortcomings of its reception centers and for non-performance of the full-blown European Directives and Regulations relating to international protection .
