Belgrade Updates | 15.08.2017

In the fringe area of Sombor, a charming Serbian town with around 60.000 habitants, less than 20km to the Croatian and less then 40km distance to the Hungarian border, a temporary refugee camp / Transit Center 1 opened in the beginning of November 2016 as one of nine temporary shelters built up from autumn 2016 until spring 2017 in order to accommodate the increasing number of refugees in Serbia at this time.

Since several weeks people staying in Sombor TC feel more and more stress triggered by enforced relocations to the closed camp Presovo, the presence of fascists & racist violations from locals and pressure from the camp’s authority.

Many of Serbia’s 7,600 refugees had hoped to live elsewhere in the EU but are trying to adapt to life in the Balkans

Finnian James

When the Faqirzada family set out for a future in Europe, they did not imagine it like this. As far as they were concerned, Europe meant Germany: their oldest son was already at university in Munich, and they would surely join him in the country.

The five – two parents and three teenage children – followed the same route through the Balkans that brought about 1 million people into the EU in 2015-16. But then borders began shutting.

And so for the past eight months, Muhammad Shafi Faqirzada and his wife and children have been marooned in Serbia. Slowly, they are beginning to realise they might be here for a long time.

On the 5th of May the Ministry of Labor, Social and Veteran Affairs announced to relocate migrants who are staying in Belgrade to the reception centres all over Serbia. According to Nenad Ivansevic, State Secretary of this Ministry, the plan was to complete this mission within 20 days. As for now, on the 10th of May 2017, the information at hands intensify towards a quicker eviction than primarily announced. Also, although it was announced that „force will not be used to transfer migrants – instead they will be offered, ‚in a humane manner“ to move to a reception center“² the Commissariat for refugees already announced to start the eviction and demolishment of the Baracks already by tomorrow 7am. Furthermore, several kitchen collectives were told that they have to stop providing food by the end of this weekend.

As the eviction is expected to start today morning, 7am, a twitter account was just launched where updates about the process of eviction will be posted. You can follow it on twitter.

News Deeply | 10.04.2017

As borders have tightened along the western Balkan route to Europe, more lone female refugees are arriving in Serbia having experienced violence and trafficking. Many who want to continue their journeys are using even riskier routes and never appear in official data.

Preethi Nallu

BELGRADE – Like many female refugees, Maryam would rather speak about other women who have fled their countries than share her own story. “We have come to the point of no return,” said the mother in her late 20s, tears rolling down her cheeks. “We women have endured a lot.”

It was February in Belgrade, and the Afghan refugee had just crossed over the border with Kosovo. She trudged to the Serbian capital in the thick of the winter, taking turns with her husband to carry their two children.

As she absorbed her unfamiliar surroundings, it dawned on Maryam how far she was from her Kandahar home; she began to convulse in panic. She regained her composure and apologized profusely. “I must not reveal any weakness in front of my children,” she said.

The family’s convoluted route to Europe started in the summer of 2015. They crossed the border to Iran and trekked to the Turkish coast. They crossed the Aegean Sea to Greece, before traveling northward through Albania, then Kosovo and Serbia, hoping to pass through Hungary and finally reach Austria.

Serbian authorities have detained 20 migrants in the north of the country while up to another 200 were rounded up and sent to a camp in the south, a government official said on Tuesday.

„Twenty people have been taken in for questioning,“ the official who asked not to be named told Reuters without elaborating further.

He added the other migrants were taken away from in and around Sid in three buses to a camp in Presevo, near the Macedonian border in the south.

Migrants waiting in Serbia face new barriers including an electrified fence

Behind a high metal fence topped with loose curls of barbed wire, the newly positioned blue shipping containers lined neatly along Hungary’s southern border at Röszke provide a glimpse of the new plans of the prime minister, Viktor Orbán, to detain thousands of asylum seekers, including children.

Construction on Hungary’s new detention camps and a second electrified fence, which stretches 108 miles along its border with Serbia, are now under way despite virulent opposition from the UN, human rights groups and a European court ruling which it was hoped might halt the country’s determination to imprison refugees.
